Take A Simple Idea & Take It Seriously

Taking A Simple Idea Seriously
“Take a simple idea and take it seriously” - Charlie Munger

An essential element of becoming a great thinker is practicing the simple wisdoms others have passed on. "Taking a simple idea seriously" is one such wisdom. It may even be the one to start with.

The concepts on this website are not rocket science. When you read posts like “Confidence Is A Choice”, “How To Manifest Your Dreams”, or “Have Relentless Optimism” you know almost immediately what they mean. But will you take them seriously? Taking them seriously is where the life-changing stuff happens.

Some tips to establish a practice of taking simple ideas seriously:

  • Set a reminder each day to think about them - use a post-it note or Siri / Alexa (this is my go to) to remind you each day. E.g. "Siri, remind me each day at 7am that confidence is a choice". The point is repetition. By consistently thinking about said idea over a longer time frame (I suggest a couple weeks as a baseline) you will stand a MUCH higher chance of embodying that idea, and subsequently having it change your life.

  • Read/Consume Ideas Slowly - Read/watch/listen one or two ideas at a time. Pause. Think about the importance of those concepts and how they can be applied to your life. This is a seriously potent way to make ideas stick.

  • Use Visual Cues - display books, pictures, quotes, etc of the persons you know embody the traits you are working to adopt. You will be reminded and think of them each time you see the cue. This helps more than you might realize.

  • Tell / Teach People About The Idea - “If you want to learn something, teach it”. You’d be amazed how taking the vantage point of the teacher makes concepts stick. Heck, it’s part of the reason I created this website. You are forced to solidify and materialize the concepts in order to teach them someone else. Perhaps paradoxically, this helps you as much--and maybe even more--than the student.

  • Create Massive Space - wake up early, stay up late (try not to sacrifice sleep though!) or leave work a little early. Practice these concepts while you exercise. Life can come at you fast, and demolish quality growth/thinking time if you don't get ahead of it. Creating the physical space, but also the mental space (meditative activities can help), is imperative to entrench these concepts.

Why is this important for me? Great news! Powerful, life-changing concepts are everywhere, but not everyone takes them seriously enough to utilitze them. Use the tips above to separate yourself from the pack--especially when consuming the material on this website--and watch as exciting new trajectories take off in your life.
